Interesting news, I was watching Moral Orel just now and I recognised a song that they played. It was Love Love Love by The Mountain Goats. It's an excellent song and I started listening to it from Winamp while watching the episode. It was pretty awesome to hear my Winamp synch up with Moral Orel's soundtrack.

Also, Brandon, if you know the answer you should tell poor Kyle instead of Jerking him around.

So, Sonic Youth week starts on pitchfork tv tomorrow. Pitchfork is doing this in celebration of Sonic Youth's SIXTEENTH studio album, Eternal, being released later this year. I want to celebrate as well, and I need help figuring out how to do that. I know you guys aren't Sonic Youth fans, so I'll post a mini-biography for them.


Ok, so, the story of Sonic Youth begins when Thurston Moore (their Guitarist) moves to New York in the mid seventies, '76 I think. Thurston loves punk music (ironic name huh?), so he joins a band which then art student Lee Ranaldo becomes a fan of. Thurston's band breaks up, and he joins CKM with Kim Gordon. Later Kim and Thurston formed a band that went through various completely ridiculous names before settling on the Arcadians in the early eighties (maybe '81?). They play at Noise fest, and Lee calls the Arcadians "the most ferocious guitar band that I had ever seen in my life." So Thurston asks Lee to join him and Kim and he accepts. They all essentially flip a coin to decide who plays what instruments (two guitars and a drum set was all they had and they could all play all of them equally well) every night for a while until they meet Richard Edson who took over on drums.


Thurston renames the band Sonic youth soon after combining the nickname of some dude whose name escapes me and the trend in reggae music of putting the word youth at the end of band names. Still in the early eighties, they sign with neutral records. At this point, Edson quits to pursue his acting career and Bob Bert takes over on drums. The band leaves on a tour supporting someone (the Swans?) and at the end of the tour Thurston gets pissed and fires Bob Bert in favor of Jim Sclavunos. They record their album Confusion is Sex and Sclavunos quits. Bob rejoins after getting assured he won't just be dumped after the tour again.


(the following part has nothing to do with anything but is a REALLY cool story, bro) So the New York Press ignores the noise punk scene completely for a while but then gets their heads out of their asses... sorta. Enter Robert Christgau a music reviewer who sucks at his job. He gives Sonic Youth a bad live review leading to a feud of sorts during which Thurston renames the song "Kill yr idols" to "I Killed Christgau With My Big Fucking Dick". (back to the story) Sonic Youth records Bad Moon Rising which they still to this day describe as "americana" which is sorta a laugh for people from this area who get earfulls of "americana" on a daily basis. They get pissed at Neutral and sign with Homestead. At this point, the New York Press decides to plant their heads firmly back in their asses, calls Sonic Youth pretentious and artsy and refuse to review Bad Moon Rising. This makes them look like even bigger jackasses than usual when the record hits the UK and becomes pretty damn popular. So they go on tour and Bob actually gets bored playing Bad Moon Rising's songs (these people, amirite?) so he quits and Thurston hires Steve Shelley formerly of the band Crucifucks.


Sonic Youth switches to SST records and releases EVOL, The New York Press, still pissed that they keep missing their chance to make nice with Sonic Youth, decides to jump ships to the pro-noise camp and says that Sonic Youth is doing the most original guitar work since Jimi Hendrix. At one point during EVOL's popularity, People magazine called Sonic Youth "the aural equivilant of a toxic waste dump", and they meant it as a compliment. Now SY records the album Sister, which has something to do with Phillip K. Dick or something, I dunno.


Now SY are pissed at SST, and they decide to release Daydream Nation on Enigma Records, sucks for SST. Seriously, everyone and their mom's goldfish has Daydream Nation on their BEST SHIT EVAR list, but due to Enigma's fuck-ups, it barely even gets shipped out to stores. Thurston gets pissed and calls Enigma a "cheap-jack Mafioso outfit".


So now we get to Goo, SY's first record for Geffen. This album is a double edged sword for me, it really is great, but it produced the song "kool thing" which is the song everyone knows them for; people listen to it and think they know SY and that's a shame. By the way, Chuck D from Public Enemy guested on "kool thing" and he made himself sound retarded in the background; he just goes "YEAH!" and "WUUUURD UP!" every once and a while... ridiculous. So later on the album Dirty comes out and Sonic Youth gets to record the song "youth against fascism" with Minor Threat and Fugazi's Ian Mckaye. Now we're in the late nineties, and SY goes crazy and starts releasing basement recordings on their own record label. These had serialised names (SYR1, SYR2, SYR3,..., SYR8), were almost entirely instrumental, and the liner notes were in different languages from album to album (SYR5 - Japanese, SYR8 - Danish or Dutch or something, etc.). Yoko Ono played with them on SYR4, or so I hear, I can't find the damned things so if you can let me know.


That takes us up to around 2000 or so. I don't really know what they've been up to lately, I know their newer music is starting to return to their roots, but I don't know if that's on purpose or not. They had their gear stolen in California in 1999 and then it was found again in like 2004, that's something. They were near ground zero on 9/11, that's another factoid. That took me like an hour and a half to remember and type. I did all of that without sources, so check it before you try to answer life altering quiz show questions with them.
